Skin Resurfacing Q & A

What is Skin Resurfacing?

Dr. Epstein uses the skin resurfacing procedure known as Icon™, which is a laser that uses intense pulsed light to stimulate the production of collagen to treat your wrinkles and tighten skin. Dr. Epstein uses Icon to address the following issues:

  • Fine lines or wrinkles, in particular around your forehead, mouth, and face
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Scarring from acne or chickenpox
  • Liver spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Warts
  • Enlarged glands or veins

How Does a Physician Perform the Icon Skin Resurfacing Procedure?

Dr. Epstein applies the laser’s handpiece to the affected area to warm the tissue. The laser heats your skin to five to 10 degrees Celsius above your average body temperature, triggering your brain to respond to the damage.

Your body produces new elastin, hyaluronic acid, and collagen to replace the damaged tissue. The tissue created by this effect fills in wrinkles. The laser breaks up skin pigment, and then your body begins eliminating it. That process corrects skin discoloration.

As a scar treatment, the laser replaces collagen to smooth the appearance of your skin.

What Can You Expect After the Icon Skin Resurfacing Procedure?

The procedure doesn’t require any downtime, so you can return to work and perform your daily activities immediately. You should experience little discomfort during and after the procedure.

You might have a mild, sunburn-like feeling, so Dr. Epstein applies a cold pack to the treated area immediately after the treatment. Additionally, minor swelling and skin peeling are possible. These side effects tend to resolve themselves within two to 24 hours after the procedure, some lasting for a few days at most.

In most cases, you may need more than one Icon skin resurfacing procedure, depending on the size and severity of the problem. Typically, you may need between four to eight treatment sessions. During your initial consultation, Dr. Epstein explains her expectations regarding the number of treatments she thinks you will need.
